Six of Crows is one of the most popular YA series in the Grishaverse due in part to the mysterious and charismatic Kaz Brekker, leader of the Crows. Today we are going to try and create a Kaz Brekker Halloween costume that really captures his look. His style is somewhat dark but elegant and formal and shouldn't be that difficult to recreate, just don't forget his gloves!
Kaz Brekker Style
Let's talk about Kaz's style for a minute. There are some trademark items that are a must have for an authentic looking Kaz Brekker costume, namely his crow head walking cane, his gloves and hat.
Kaz (Dirtyhands) always wears his gloves and if you have read the Six of Crow's series then you will know why these are an essential part of the costume, and if you haven't read it, then there's no better time than the present!
Kaz also walks with a limp and his walking cane is another prop that really can't be left out. His cane is tipped with a crow head that comes in useful when cornered, unless Inej is nearby of course.
One thing to remember when trying to achieve an authentic look for Kaz is that he created his own style when he adopted the surname Brekker and his look is refined and formal like that of a merchant in Ketterdam but his reasons for the style he chose are to mock those "respected" merchants. He would never dress like any of the other gang leaders in the Barrel.
Let's Create a Kaz Brekker Costume
The idea here will be to find some of the best items to create an authentic looking costume for our favourite gang leader. We are going to start with the parts that you probably don't have lying around the house somewhere, cause those are the most interesting part of his look.
Kaz Brekker Cane
I've already talked a bit about his cane and I'm sure you are familiar with it and why exactly it is so important to complete the look, so lets skip ahead and see what options are available out there. A quick search is all it takes and look at what I found, as it turns out there are lots of different designs to choose from. Finding a crow head walking cane for Kaz was easier than I thought, here are a few I like..
Kaz Brekker Gloves
Kaz aka Dirtyhands always wears his gloves, his nickname may have come from his glove wearing but also from his willingness to take on any job and to "get his hands dirty" as the boss of a gang known to get the job done. No matter the reason, if you want to look like the leader of the Crows this Halloween you must wear gloves! Any black gloves will do so if you already have some that will work great but if you don't then some of these might be suitable.
Kaz Brekker Costume Top Hat
The black hat that Kaz wears could be either a bowler or a top hat but it is an essential part of his costume and is his way of mocking the Ketterdam merchants.
Kaz Brekker Trench Coat
Another signature look for Kaz is his trenchcoat, while this is another essential part of his outfit you can be a little creative here, some images will depict Kaz wearing a mid thigh trench with the collar turned up, in others its almost to his ankles and the collar is turned down.
Whichever you choose, as long as you have your gloves, cane and hat you will have achieved the refined Brekker look. Here are a few options I like that might suit if you don't have a trenchcoat already.
Kaz Suits and Ties and Waistcoats.
Although Kaz is rarely seen without his trenchcoat, to complete his look you will need to wear some type of black shirt and waistcoat with suit pants. Kaz's outfits are all fitted, not loose and his waistcoat is usually fastened quite close to his shirt collar.
If you plan on wearing the trenchcoat then you can be less particular with the suit part but it is a nice addition to the costume. Here are some ideas you might like..
As you can see from the ideas above, it wouldn't be terribly difficult to create the perfect Kaz Brekker Halloween Costume but it would be a lot of fun playing this character. Kaz is afterall one of the most interesting characters in the Grishaverse and the clothes alone do not make the man.
Once you have your costume you will have to behave the part too, Kaz is a leader who won't be messed with, his manner comes across as cold and ruthless and he finds it almost impossible to show a softer side. He is physically fit but of a slim build and has a limp but is also incredibly agile and able to move at speed when necessary.
However you decide to play Brekker, it is guarenteed to be a great costume choice and would work extremely well as part of a group costume so you and your friends/partner could create your own Six of Crows or Dregs crew for Halloween.
